How are values and attitudes conveyed in the film and the novel? In the novel Persuasion by Jane Austen and the film Becoming Jane place by Julian Jerr oldish, both texts presented ideas of gender, marriage, wealth and social rank that shaped the attitudes, values and social etiquette in the early nineteenth century. The protagonists in both texts, Anne Elliot and Jane Austen were characters who defied and ch entirelyenged those ideas. Gender was an important construct socially and economically in the 19th century as men and women had different roles in family. The novel and film were based incisively about the attitude that womens main role in society was to marry and to someone who was socially acceptable. Dialogue and wrangle in equal manner showed values in society. In the film Jane says I depart not marry without affection, like my mother. This suggests that it was a tradition that women were compel to marry, with or without affected, however this was rebutted by her mother when she says Would you rather be a poor old main, ridiculous, despised and the butt of jokes. This shows that if women were not to marry at all, they would be frowned upon and ridiculed. They were also expected to be compliant and dutiful. She suggests that women are capable of more than the roles that society allows them. except, in the film, we incur the play scene, an example of Jane Austen defying these expectations. In the beginning we see a two shot of Jane and her cousin sitting compliantly and notice the cricket match, this indicated that women were only seen as passive observers and were not go in in manly activity such as cricket. just this is challenged by Jane when she picks up the bat and participated.
